Rowlatt Act (1919)

In March 1919 British Government of India passed a law that is Rowlatt Act . It is also known as Anarchical and Revolutionary Crimes Act, 1919. This act is based on the recommendation of the Rowlatt Commission headed by the British judge, sir Sydney Rowlatt.

This act give the authority to British government to arrest any people suspected of anti-British activities. Without trial it arrest any people for 2 years.

It also give power to police , that he search any place without warrant. The main aim of rowlatt act is to limit or control the activities of revolutionary and freedom struggle.

It also imposed restriction to the press and Ban on Public Gatherings.

Rowlatt Satyagraha

The Rowlatt Satyagraha, also known as the Rowlatt Movement, was a nonviolent protest led by Mahatma Gandhi in 1919 against the Rowlatt Act. Gandhi urged non-cooperation against the Act, economic boycotts, and hartals (strikes) as well as other forms of disciplined resistance.This was Gandhi’s first mass political movement in India.

Gandhi declared 6 April 1919 as a day of nationwide hartal (strike).
