Swadeshi and Boycott Movement (1905–1911)

Swadeshi movement

On 7th August 1905 Swadeshi movement begins in Town Hall, Kolkata. 

The movement is known as Swadeshi or Self-rule movement because it placed a strong significance on boycotting government-run schools, colleges, and other government services, as well as foreign-made clothing and products like salt and sugar.

Rabindranath Tagore introduced the concept of Swadeshi Samaj in 1904 as self-sufficient group of people who are cooperating to become independent while avoiding government assistance.

Impact
  • It led to the revival of domestic cottage industries and handicrafts, which were declining under British industrial policies
  • The promotion of indigenous industries.
  • It fostering national unity and laid the foundation for India’s struggle for self-rule.
  • Led to the establishment of Indian enterprises like Tata Steel.
  • To improve the national education system.
  • Foreign goods were not only boycotted but also publicly burned.
